The Bean Green Coffee Company, best coffee in South Africa

The story so far

The wonderful effect of the coffee plant was first discovered back in the 9th century by the goats in Ethiopia. We are grateful to  those goats. We are also grateful that the goatherd Kaldi had the courage to follow their lead and try some of those little red berries himself. A few hundred years and a number of happy coincidences later,  Peter Winter, proprietor of The Bean Green, found his way into importing the green beans straight from the place it all started and beginning on the road to opening his own roastery in Durban.

Throw in the perfect little spot on Helen Joseph Road in Glenwood, a dynamic father-daughter duo, a 40 year old turntable and a killer collection of 1970’s vinyl and you know all you need to know about our operation.

These are the people behind the beans:

This is Peter. aka “Master Roaster”. The man who started it all.  He had a dream and that dream was roasting coffee from his very own spot. The Bean Green is his domain. He appreciates simple excellence and that is what you get here. No frills, no fuss, just outstanding coffee. He doesn’t take much in life seriously except Manchester City football and coffee. Start a conversation with him, you won’t be disappointed.

This is Mel. aka “The Boss”. Daughter of Peter and co-owner of the Bean Green. She was the original Bean Green barista helping to take the café to a two year reign (2009&2010) as Café Society’s Best Cappuccino in Durban. She bakes delectable treats for the café each and every morning and has combined her passion for gourmet coffee, rock ‘n roll and all things creative into an authentic home for her daily customers and her team . Maybe a little too much like home; don’t be surprised to hear her constantly singing along to the records.

This is Nkosi. aka Sikelele. The newest member of the team. He is passionate about everything coffee. An extraordinary barista before joining us, he wanted to work here to learn more about the roasting process and steal all our ideas for his own café one day. He’s the sweetest member of this operation. If you ask him really nicely he’ll pour you latte art of pretty much anything you can imagine. Seriously. He’s perfected the Springbok for the World Cup.

This is Rory. aka Maximus. He was the first person to work here that wasn’t a Winter. That makes him brave. It should also inform you that he makes amazing coffee under pressure. He learnt about coffee in a strange foreign land called Norway and brought his skills to the heat of Durban, where the Bean Green welcomed his caffeinated passion. He also proclaims to have a few killer dance moves. He has been banned from showing them to customers.
